The Japanese te-form
The te-form is the verb form ending in て or で, e.g. 食べて (tabete) and 読んで (yonde). Ichidan verbs replace る with て; godan verbs change their ending (う/つ/る → って, む/ぶ/ぬ → んで, く → いて, ぐ → いで, す → して); する → して, 来る → 来て. It links actions and builds requests (〜てください), ongoing actions (〜ている) and more.

Practice: pick the te-form
1. _(書く)
te-form of 書く (to write)
Godan verbs ending in く change to いて.
2. _(飲む)
te-form of 飲む (to drink)
む changes to んで.
3. _(行く)
te-form of 行く (to go)
行く is the one exception among く-verbs: 行って.
4. _(食べる)
te-form of 食べる (to eat)
Ichidan verbs replace る with て.
5. _(帰る)
te-form of 帰る (to go home)
帰る is a godan verb, so る becomes って – even though it looks like an ichidan verb.
Check any verb with the verb conjugator – it shows the te-form and every other form.
