The kanji 調 means tune, tone, meter, key (music), writing style, prepare, exorcise, investigate. Its on’yomi (Chinese-derived reading) is チョウ (chou); its kun’yomi (native Japanese reading) is しら.べる、しら.べ、ととの.う、ととの.える (shiraberu, shirabe, totonou, totonoeru). It is written with 15 strokes, under radical 言 (no. 149).
