The kanji 厳 means stern, strictness, severity, rigidity. Its on’yomi (Chinese-derived reading) is ゲン、ゴン (gen, gon); its kun’yomi (native Japanese reading) is おごそ.か、きび.しい、いか.めしい、いつくし (ogosoka, kibishii, ikameshii, itsukushi). It is written with 17 strokes, under radical 厂 (no. 27).
