The kanji 嘗 means once, before, formerly, ever, never, ex-, lick, lap up. Its on’yomi (Chinese-derived reading) is ショウ、ジョウ (shou, jou); its kun’yomi (native Japanese reading) is かつ.て、こころ.みる、な.める (katsute, kokoromiru, nameru). It is written with 14 strokes, under radical 口 (no. 30).
