The kanji 質 means substance, quality, matter, temperament. Its on’yomi (Chinese-derived reading) is シツ、シチ、チ (shitsu, shichi, chi); its kun’yomi (native Japanese reading) is たち、ただ.す、もと、わりふ (tachi, tadasu, moto, warifu). It is written with 15 strokes, under radical 貝 (no. 154).
