Terms of service

Last updated: 9 October 2026

In short: the reference pages are free. Study sessions in the app need a monthly or yearly subscription, which renews automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the period you paid for, and you can get a full refund within 14 days of your first payment.

1. Who we are

I Love Kanji (https://www.ilovekanji.com) is run from Norway. In these terms “we” means I Love Kanji and “you” means the person using the service. Questions, refunds and complaints: duborg@bedrift2.no.

2. The service

  • The pages under /learn-japanese (dictionary, kanji, JLPT lists, grammar, guides and tools) are free to use.
  • The I Love Kanji app lets you pick or import decks, study words in sessions, review them with spaced repetition, practise reading with AI-generated sentences and sync your progress between devices.
  • Study sessions and AI sentence practice need an active subscription. Browsing your words, decks and progress does not.

3. Your account

  • You need an account (email and password) to subscribe. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what happens in your account.
  • An account is for one person. Don’t share it or resell access.
  • You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, you need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to buy a subscription.

4. Subscriptions, prices and payment

  • You can choose a monthly or a yearly plan. The price, currency and billing interval are shown before you pay, and the price you pay is the price shown at checkout.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card details.
  • You pay in advance for each period. The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel.
  • If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a while. If it still fails, study sessions are locked until the payment goes through.
  • If we change the price, we tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies. The new price applies from your next period, and you can cancel before then.
  • Discount codes apply as described when you use them. We may stop offering a code, but a discount already applied to your subscription keeps working as described.

5. Cancelling

You can cancel at any time in the app under Progress → Account → Manage subscription, or by emailing duborg@bedrift2.no. Your subscription then stops renewing, and you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for. Your words and progress are not deleted when you cancel.

6. Right of withdrawal and refunds

  • If you are a consumer, you can withdraw from your first purchase within 14 days of buying it. Email duborg@bedrift2.no (or use the standard withdrawal form) and we refund the full amount within 14 days, to the same payment method.
  • After 14 days, payments are not refunded for the part of a period you didn’t use, except where the law says otherwise or where something on our side stopped the service from working.
  • Renewals can be cancelled at any time (see section 5), so you are never charged for a new period you don’t want as long as you cancel before it starts.

7. Using the service fairly

  • Don’t try to get around the subscription, overload or attack the service, scrape it in bulk, or misuse the AI features.
  • Only import decks and add content you have the right to use. You keep the rights to what you import or write.
  • We may suspend an account that breaks these rules. If we close a paid account without good reason, we refund the unused part of the period.

8. Content and accuracy

  • Dictionary data comes from open datasets (JMdict, KANJIDIC2, KanjiVG and Tatoeba) under their own licences – see sources & methodology. JLPT levels are unofficial.
  • Practice sentences are written by AI and can contain mistakes. I Love Kanji is a learning aid and doesn’t guarantee any exam result.

9. Availability and changes

We work to keep I Love Kanji available and to improve it, which means features may change. If we ever shut down the paid service, we refund the unused part of any prepaid period. The app keeps your progress on your device, and signed-in progress is stored in our database (see the privacy policy).

10. Liability

We are responsible for providing the service as described in these terms. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses. Nothing in these terms limits the rights you have as a consumer under mandatory law.

11. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters for your subscription, we tell you by email at least 30 days in advance. You can cancel before the change applies.

12. Law and complaints

These terms are governed by Norwegian law, without taking away any protection you have under the law of the country where you live. Contact us first at duborg@bedrift2.no and we will try to sort it out. Consumers in Norway can also get help from Forbrukerrådet, and consumers elsewhere in the EU/EEA from their national consumer body.
